Fast forward to next summer. Pressed against the rope among the crowd of fans at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge outside Seattle, or the Safeway Classic in Portland, or maybe even Winged Foot, you extend your arm toward Tom or Paula or Tiger. Your opportunity approaches. What are you waving for an autograph? A clean program? A crumpled pairings guide? Tournament hat? Your sleeve?

Each would make a good reminder of extraordinary events, memorable golf and beautiful courses. This year, be proactive. Plan ahead to build your own collection of autographs or add a special touch to your 2006 holiday gifting.

WHAT TO BRING
Willing to sign most printed or fabric items, professional golfers frequently draw the line at balls and trading cards. Do your homework. Players have contracts so bring the appropriate brand to increase your chance at a signed ball. Older players tend to sign trading cards while younger players quickly move to the next extended hand without comment.

Always bring a Sharpie pen, just in case.

ONLINE SEARCH
When April rain fills the bunkers at your course, launch your Internet browser to shop for golf books and collectibles. Opportunities come and go, so watching and checking periodically might unearth that perfect addition to your collection, like Tom Watson's "1980 Rules of Golf Explained."

BE CREATIVE
Last summer at the Jeld-Wen Tradition, Watson smiled and chatted with the throng of spectators while autographing the proffered pennants, programs, hats and books. When handed an open birthday card, he signed it too. Now that will be a special gift.
